PLACE Reading Teacher Test

Reading teachers are specialized professionals trained to assess reading levels in students, diagnose problems, and work with individual students to attain the best reading outcomes. Reading teacher candidates in the state of Colorado must pass the PLACE Reading Teacher Test as part of the licensure process.

The PLACE Reading Teacher Test is a timed, multiple-choice exam that covers four broad categories of knowledge:

  1. Foundations of Reading. Includes questions about diverse factors that affect reading development, communication arts, theories, and others.
  2. Instructional Practices. Covers emergent literacy, vocabulary development, comprehension tools, strategic reading, and more.
  3. Assessment, Diagnosis, and Evaluation. Covers assessment instruments, methods and information, reading difficulties, and evaluation techniques.
  4. Role of the Reading Professional. Includes questions about the role of families and communities in reading, organizing the educational environment, the relationship between curriculum and classroom instruction, and others.
