PLACE FAQS

What is the Program for Licensing Assessments for Colorado Educators (PLACE)?

The PLACE is a set of exams designed to measure prospective teacher'’ professional and subject-area knowledge. It assesses whether you know what is necessary to teach in Colorado.

Who is required to take the PLACE?

Most people who want to teach in Colorado must earn a passing score on at least one PLACE test to fulfill state certification requirements. General elementary school teachers must pass the Elementary Education PLACE, and elementary teachers who teach specific subjects such as art or music must also pass the PLACE test for that subject. Secondary school teachers also must take the specific PLACE test for the subject they wish to teach.

What knowledge does the PLACE measure?

Each PLACE test measures a specific set of knowledge and skills. For a list of objectives measured by each PLACE test, see www.place.nesinc.com/CO_viewFW_opener.asp.

How can I prepare for the PLACE?

The PLACE website (www.place.nesinc.com/index.asp) offers free test study guides that contain objectives and practice questions. You also may want to purchase more comprehensive study materials such as guides or flash cards devoted to the specific PLACE tests you need to pass. The best study guides will cover test content and offer specific test-taking strategies to increase your chances of success.

Where can I take the tests?

The PLACE is offered in different locations around Colorado. For a complete list of test locations, go to www.place.nesinc.com/CO18_testsites.asp.

When can I take the tests?

The PLACE is offered for seven months out of the year, typically every other month. For a complete list of test dates, go to www.place.nesinc.com/CO18_testdates.asp.

Can I take the PLACE online?

No. The PLACE is only offered as a paper-based test.

What is the cost of taking the PLACE?

Every test taker must pay a $35 processing fee as part of registration. Then every PLACE test is $60 each. You can register late for a test, though it will cost you an additional $50 to do so.

How do I register for the PLACE?

There are three ways to register for the PLACE: Internet, U.S. mail, or telephone. To register online or obtain information about registering via mail or telephone, visit the PLACE registration page at www.place.nesinc.com/CO18_regchecklist.asp.

When will I get my PLACE scores?

Scores are released about one month after the testing date. When you register online, you can elect to have your scores sent to you by e-mail, thought this is considered an "unofficial" score. Otherwise scores are mailed to you.

For specific score release dates, go to www.place.nesinc.com/CO18_testdates.asp.

Who will see my PLACE scores?

Your test scores will be reported to you, the Colorado Department of Education, and any school you selected when you registered.

What if I don't pass a PLACE test?

There is no limit on the number of times you may retake a PLACE test. But if you did not devote considerable time to preparing for the exam the first time, it is a good idea to invest in a dedicated study guide before you retake the test.

What if I pass one of the tests, but not others?

You may retake any PLACE test as often as necessary until you pass, but you must reregister and pay registration fees again to retake a test.
